Welcome to the international English Library

We welcome you to the International English Library! In 1946, the British Council gave this library to the people of Düsseldorf. Since February 1999, it has been run by "Friends of the International Library e.V." whose members give their time and energy on a completely voluntary basis. Any member can take books out (videos, too). It's easy to become a member - just 10 EURO for an entire year! Please show a valid ID and proof of address.

Books
Our shelves house almost 26,000 books written in English, including fiction, short stories, biographies, detective stories and world-acclaimed literature. They also include non-fiction, history, philosophy, literary criticism, geography and travel. We have books for children and for young adults. Fiction and non-fiction can be taken out for four weeks. Reference works and dictionaries also are available for use in the library.

DVDs and Videos
The International English Library has about 1,500 DVDs and still a small selection of Videos. Included are some of the newest releases as well as movie classics from years gone by, movies for children and a selection of documentaries. All are in English or with English subtitles. Members can take these out for three days (for 1.50 EURO) or a week (for 2.50 EURO). Films can also be viewed at the library (for 0.50 EURO).

Newspapers and Magazines
The International English Library subscribes to several daily English and American newspapers and magazines, including the Sunday Times. These can be enjoyed here at the library in our reading corner over a cup of coffee or tea.

Children's Corner
Great for the little ones. A wide selection of books and puzzles can keep kids busy while you browse through the collection or read a newspaper.

VHS Language Course
These books can be taken out for the entire semester. Language cassettes can be used in the library on our cassette players.

Audio Books
Great for relaxed listening, or in the car, or for people with impaired vision.

Teaching Materials
Tapes, texts and visual aids for teaching and listening comprehension. Just ask at the front desk about lending procedures.

Besides Books
A seminar area for all types of English language events is available for about 50 people. Past events have included art exhibits, lectures on politics and current events, literature and poetry readings. Lists of coming events are on-line and also available at the front desk.
